What does "sometimes lies were more dependable than truth." mean?

I suppose it means that sometimes it will be better to know a lie, than to let it hurt when you find  out the truth

It means that sometime lies are good for example: if a man comes by and asks if your mother is there, u can say no even though she's there just because maybe this guy wants to hunt down your mom...just like a white lie.
