After the nazis were defeated and the Allied forces had seized control in Germany, Japan was the only remaining Axis power that was still active in the Pacific Theatre.

When the US dropped the Atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender of Japan and WII ended.
