if 2 and 4 are factors of a number, is 8 also a factor of that number? I know it's false ( 12 is a multiple of 2 and 4 but not 8 ) but can someone explain WHY?

It would be false because 2 and 4 are factors which simply mean they can multiply togeher to get another number
